A first-of-its-scale powdered activated carbon manufacturing facility abruptly shut down during its commissioning phase upon discovering a multitude of structural problems in a 200-ft long, large-diameter stainless steel exhaust duct. Structural problems included the rupture of full-penetration welds, failure of welded support connections, local buckling of duct sections, and permanent deformations. This session will present the forensic investigation of the performance of the exhaust duct.

 

Charlie Russo, a Senior Principal in the Structural Engineering group at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc., is a broadly experienced consultant in the design, investigation, and rehabilitation of structures. Charlie specializes in investigations and remedial techniques for concrete, steel, timber, and masonry structures. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of New Hampshire and his Master of Science in Structural Engineering from Tufts University.
