PRESENTATION: The Backbone of Our Lakes: The Future of New Hampshire’s State Owned Dams

New Hampshire’s largest and most cherished lakes such as Winnipesaukee, Winnisquam, Squam, Newfound, Sunapee, and many others, depend on a network of state‑owned dams, many over 100 years old, that require increasing levels of maintenance, reconstruction, and funding to ensure safe water levels, protect shorefront communities, and preserve recreation and ecological health. With aging infrastructure, rising hazard classifications, and projected rehabilitation costs exceeding $400 million for state-owned dams alone, this presentation highlights the growing challenges and responsibilities tied to managing over 270 dams in New Hampshire, and why securing long‑term funding and proactive stewardship is essential to sustaining the waterbodies that define New Hampshire’s identity. SPEAKER: Corey Clark, PE - Chief Engineer at NHDES Water Division Dam Bureau

Mr. Corey Clark is the Chief Engineer of the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) Water Division’s Dam Bureau and has been with the Bureau since 2015. He began his career as a Dam Safety Engineer, conducting inspections and permitting for public and private dams. In 2018, Corey was promoted to Chief Engineering and Construction Engineer, where he oversaw major rehabilitation projects on 270 State-owned dams. Since 2023, he has served as the administrator of the Dam Bureau, overseeing all three sections of the Dam Bureau, while managing dam repair and operations, dam safety regulations, and water resources statewide. Corey holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Maine and a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of New Hampshire.
