PRESENTATION: CSI for the Built World: Why Applied Science Matters and What Can be Learned

A lawyer client once said after a tour of SGH's facilities: “It’s like CSI for buildings!” We agreed and stole the quote. SGH's Applied Science & Research (AS&R) Center provides the personnel and tools to solve complex questions, such as: What material is this? Will this design be successful? Why has this failed? This presentation will discuss a variety of projects focusing on the unusual. The work encompasses new design, repair and rehabilitation, and investigation. It will cover why Applied Science matters and what can be learned from mechanical testing, material identification and characterization, and environmental testing.

SPEAKER: Norman Perkins, PE, PMP - Director of Applied Science & Research at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, Inc. (SGH)

Norman provides strategic leadership and oversight for the Applied Science & Research Center at SGH, including physical testing, materials science, and research programs. He is dedicated to advancing the role of the center by continuing to expand testing capabilities and encouraging staff to explore creative project approaches. Norm brings his previous experience as a practicing engineer and researcher to SGH, including roles on a wide variety of civil, mechanical, environmental, structural, and fire protection engineering efforts that brought him to work in seven countries outside the U.S.

BREAKFAST: Traditional continental breakfast with freshly baked muffins, danishes, and croissants. Served with sliced fruit, yogurt, and berries. Coffee, decaf coffee, tea, and chilled fresh fruit juices will be served for beverages. PARKING: Parking is available in the parking garage attached to the hotel and conference center. Additional parking can be found in various lots and street parking throughout Manchester. Parking fees may apply at any of these locations and will not be reimbursed by SENH.

REGISTER: By 5:00pm on Monday, March 30, 2026. There will be a $10.00 late fee for anyone wishing to register past this date.

NOTE: 2.0 PDHs have been assigned for attendance. Attendees are responsible for ensuring their check-in on the attendance list upon arrival at the meeting.
