Downtown Cary Park

Description: Completed in 2023, This nature-inspired park encompasses seven acres in the center of Cary, North Carolina. The community-driven project creates winding paths that transport visitors between outdoor features—such as children's play areas, game courts, gardens, and a dog park—and to interior spaces like the marketplace, gathering house, and special event pavilion. The building designs help to blend interior spaces into the surrounding nature with conic roof forms and wood-clad walls. 

Rebecca is a Senior Project Manager with Simpson Gumpertz & Heger where she has over 14 years of experience in the Structural Engineering group. Rebecca draws from cross-disciplinary experience in structural engineering and building technology to provide comprehensive and innovative solutions. She has worked on a large range of project types, including structurally complex sculptures, historic renovations, and new building designs. Rebecca obtained her Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics and her Master of Engineering in Structural Engineering, both from Cornell University. 

ABC Rehabilitation of Hall Road Bridge, Andover NH

Description: Hall Road Bridge over Bradley Brook was a 16’ long steel stringer bridge with prestressed deck panels superstructure supported on stone masonry abutments. This bridge serves 4 residences on a dead-end road in Andover, NH. After a routine NHDOT inspection, it was recommended that the bridge be closed due to extensive deck deterioration. Hoyle Tanner personnel assisted the Town in keeping the bridge open, designing the rehabilitation, and providing construction engineering services. Due to limited funds, the Town decided to construct the project using Town forces. The Highway Department crew of 4 had no knowledge of bridge construction, but with the assistance of engineers completed the rehabilitation project in 15 days using Accelerated Bridge Construction techniques. The structural design aspect of the project was quite simple, given the nature of the bridge. This presentation will focus on the engineer's role in helping a small town with limited resources, experience, and funding to successfully and safely construct a bridge that restores public safety. This project was truly a success, as it replaced a structurally deficient bridge and restored emergency access for residents on a dead-end road, all at a fraction of the cost if it was constructed by a bridge contractor. 

Josif is a Project Manager with Hoyle Tanner and has over 20 years of experience in the inspection, evaluation, rehabilitative and new design of numerous types of bridges. Josif has co-authored several historic bridge papers. He holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of New Hampshire. 

Holly is a Structural and Resident Engineer with Hoyle Tanner. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2023. Holly has experience in the design and analysis of bridges for new construction and rehabilitation projects, as well as resident engineering experience on bridge construction projects.

Free parking is available in designated faculty/staff and commuter lots after 6:00pm (recommended lots are A, B, F, H, and P). PDH: 2.0 PDHs have been assigned for attendance.  Attendees are responsible for ensuring their check-in on the attendance list upon arrival at the meeting.
